People don’t want companies selling them on things. They don’t want to be mislead, deceived or cheated and they certainly do not want to hear things like:
“We’re the best” or “Come to us – you won’t be disappointed;” or “We Have The Best Prices In Town!”
All they will feel is that you are tricking them just so that you can get them in the door. Why? Because we’ve been lied to one too many times. People are constantly selling us things and consequently we’re getting kind of sick of it!
How would you feel?
Imagine meeting a stranger at a party. You wouldn’t shake their hand and say “Hi, I’m the best in town!” (well you might, but they probably won’t stick around long enough to hear your next sentence.)
No, instead you would probably ask about them, about their family, hobbies and work, and you would share your own story with them. It would be natural to want to get to know them and deciding whether you liked them or not would depend on how connected you felt to their story. How did they make you feel? Did they share the same opinions/feelings as you? Was there anything you had in common? When you walked away, did you feel like you knew them?
Branding a business
When branding your business, the best way to reach your audience is with the truth. Tell them WHY you’re doing what you’re doing and WHY you love to do it. If your story is strong and honest, people will come to their own conclusions about you. And it will be on their own terms.
The ones who connect with you will want to share their opinion of you with others, and before you know it, you not only have customers but you have loyal advocates who love and support you.
”People don’t buy what you do;
they buy why you do it.” – Simon Sinek
