Is your homepage wrong?
When the internet was just starting to get popular and companies were posting their first ever website online, the homepage was the most important and valuable space. It was where most of your information would lie. Since then, the way that we use websites has changed significantly. It happens more often now that someone will find your website through a direct link rather than by searching for your specific homepage. Because of this, they may land on one of your service pages first and totally skip the homepage altogether! If you’re putting all your important information on the homepage – that’s the wrong way to do it these days.
So what does this mean for homepages now? How should we treat them and what should they include? Well you’ve come to the right place! We’re about to tell you.
Simplify!
A user doesn’t like to be overwhelmed. The faster and easier it is for them to understand what you do without a ton of reading and distraction, the better. Therefore, carefully select only the most important things to display on your homepage. Bite-sized nuggets of information are often the most impactful. If the user is interested in learning more, they’ll dive into your menu to find it!
Think about your customers.
Let’s be blunt. Your company’s purpose is to solve your customer’s problem. With this mindset, it’s easier to keep from being bogged down by distractions. As a result, your customers will find it easier to see if you can solve their problem.
Rethink your menu.
Lastly, a clean home page means it’s necessary to have an extremely clear and easy to use menu. If you remember that your customers could land on any page, then you’ll see the need to include a direct and to-the-point website navigation. Remember that your website’s menu is one of the only things that remains the same from page to page on your site.
